Rural-class poet from Devon. Worked at a lace factory from the age of eight until 1847, and then as a rural postman from 1848 until his retirement in 1866. Married Jane Trick on 26 October 1847. Awarded a Civil List Pension in 1857 after Palmerston was impressed by his poem on the Crimean War, “The Lion Flag of England.” Author of *Poems by Edward Capern, Rural Postman of Bideford, Devon* (1856), *Ballads and Songs* (1858), *Devonshire Melodist* (1862), *Wayside Warbles* (1865), *Sungleams and Shadows* (1881).
