nationalist. Alternative signatures: “John S. Blackie” and “J. S. B.” Appointed the
first chair of humanity at the University of Aberdeen. Married Eliza Wyld on 19 April
1842. Published prolifically on a wide variety of subjects, and authored poetry volumes
including *Lyrical Poems* (1860) and *Lays of the Highlands and Islands* (1872). Biographical
