Philologist, short story writer, poet. Alternative signature: “A. Werner.” Born in Trieste and travelled widely with her family as a child. Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge University (1878-80). Lived in Africa (1893-96, 1911-13). In 1921 appointed Professor of Swahili and Bantu at London University.
