Kaye, John William, Sir (M)

Military historian, editor, and poet. Pseudonym: “J. W. K.” Alternative signature: “John W. Kaye.” Born in London. Married Mary Catherine Puckle in 1839. Served in India as a Bengal artillery cadet in 1832 but resigned from the army in 1841 due to ill health. Remained in India on the staff of the *Bengal Harkaru* and then as the editor of the *Calcutta Review*, which he founded in 1844. Returned to England in 1845. Joined the East India Company in 1856 as part of the home civil service. Became secretary of the foreign department of the India Office in 1858. Made Knight Commander of the Order of Star of India (KCSI) in 1871. Author of *The History of the Sepoy War in India, 1857–8* (1864–76). Biographical information: *ODNB*. (KH, CC)
