               <l><hi rendition="#pom_4538_incid_small-caps">When</hi> morning stands above the purple <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">hills</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Heavy with sleep, half-hearted for her <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">work</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">The</seg> mist cloud gathers till the darkness <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">fills</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">The</seg> sun shines fitfully across the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">murk</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And then the south wind gently breathes her <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">way</rhyme></l>
               <l>Across the mountains letting out the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">day</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Across the silence with their pale grey <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">feet</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>They clamber up the hills, as if to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">know</rhyme></l>
               <l>The hidden secrets there, that are so <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">sweet</rhyme></l>
               <l>No mortal learns them save when death’s thin <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">hand</rhyme></l>
               <l>Leads them away into that quiet <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">land</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>I think the mists take form as night comes <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">by</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Walking with sleep, across the suffering <rhyme label="f" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">land</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And souls inhabit those weird wraiths that <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">fly</rhyme></l>
               <l>In graceful wreaths, like spirits hand in <rhyme label="f" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">hand</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Aye bodiless, yet have they shape and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">form</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Their life is now a calm that ne’er knows <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">storm</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Or are they fancies breathed by weary <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">men</rhyme></l>
               <l rendition="#pom_4538_incid_line-break">Who have not strength to clothe their thoughts<lb/> with <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">words</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Or unsung songs that shall be chanted <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">then</rhyme></l>
               <l>By those who’d be as vocal as God’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">birds</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Yet cannot sing ; for earth holds firm and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">fast</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>No songs are strong until that hold is <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">cast</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>No ; I feel sure those wraiths are long dead <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">souls</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Who visit thus the earth they loved so <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">well</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Who step across the wan white stream that <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">rolls</rhyme></l>
               <l>Between the dead and living like a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">spell</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Gliding as evening falls, with shrouded <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">face</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And damp cold garments, o’er the sleeping <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">place</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Oh ! weary spirits, when I feel ye <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">pass</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Your clammy fingers seem to touch my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="p">eyes</rhyme></l>
               <l>That fain would see life as it is ; a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">las</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>You stretch between me and the summer <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="p">skies</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>Ghosts of the past—the present ne’er can <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="q">be</rhyme></l>
               <l>Pure and unscathed while thus you’re haunting <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="q">me</rhyme> !</l>
