               <l><hi rendition="#pom_16473_incid_small-caps">The</hi> border of blossoms and fruit and flow’rs</l>
               <l>Grows under the skilful <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">hand</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And butterflies flutter among the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">leaves</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>While birds of a tropic <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">land</rhyme></l>
               <l>Perch on the boughs of fantastic <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="b">trees</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>Themselves a fantastic <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">band</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>The soft blues melt into softer greys,</l>
               <l>And the grey is lost in the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">green</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>A silken thread crosses with fairy foot</l>
               <l>Its homelier rivals be<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">tween</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>As a gay Cinderella, e’er stroke of twelve,</l>
               <l>In her jewels and beauty’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">sheen</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>The purples and fawns and delicate pinks</l>
               <l>Are flushed by a crimson <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">ray</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And a golden streak glimmers out here and there,</l>
               <l>Like a sunbeam in wanton <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">play</rhyme></l>
               <l>E’er its statelier comrades have marched in sight</l>
               <l>To cheer the twilight a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">way</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>And the lady bends over her dainty work,</l>
               <l>A dreamy smile on her <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">face</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Thinking of days buried deep in the past,</l>
               <l>While her dext’rous fingers <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">trace</rhyme></l>
               <l>Forms copied from ancient tapestry, full</l>

               <l>Contenting themselves needle and lute</l>

               <l>When the highest art the maiden knew</l>

               <l>In broidered figure, the chivalrous deeds</l>
               <l>Of battle or tournament <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">gay</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And border the same with some quaint device</l>
               <l>Of formal tendril and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">spray</rhyme> :</l>

               <l>When the tale of daring which sounded so sweet</l>

               <l>Which her little page had <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">sung</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Might repeat itself on her chamber walls</l>
               <l>Where the costly arras <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">hung</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>“ Were those happier days,” the lady asks,</l>

               <l>“ Than these modern days of excitement and haste,</l>
               <l>Cheap literature, gas, and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">steam</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>When women may brave the world alone,</l>
               <l>And ‘ Advance’ is the thought su<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">preme</rhyme> ? ”</l>

               <l>When only a passing hour, now and then,</l>
               <l>Can be snatched from the busy <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">day</rhyme></l>
               <l>To play with the crewels heaped on her lap,</l>
               <l>And indulge in phanta<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="d">sy</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>When adventures no longer wait to be told</l>
               <l>Of crusader or mock-af<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">fray</rhyme> :</l>

               <l>But chase, and battle, and foreign tour</l>
               <l>Are followed by line and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">rule</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>And the noble thought is left unsaid</l>
               <l>In the fear of ridi<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">cule</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And the generous impulse sternly checked</l>
               <l>In fashion’s frigid <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">school</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>“ Is it better so ?—Is it gain or loss ? ”</l>

               <l>Till at last a whisper sounds in her soul—</l>
               <l>“ We are born, and then we <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">die</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>“ All things must change in this life of ours</l>
