               <l>Upon the slumbering air ; earth, heaven, are still,</l>
               <l>As the deep unbreathing quiet of the tomb ;</l>
               <l>But yet it is a pause of harmony,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">A</seg> vacancy inducing pleasing thoughts,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">A</seg> silence, where no troublous dreams obscure,</l>
               <l>That unto pleasure owe not origin,</l>
               <l>Have power to enter. Placid is the sky,</l>
               <l>Though not unclouded—verdant are the fields,</l>
               <l>In summer robe luxuriant—green the hills—</l>
               <l>More deeply green the forests, through whose boughs</l>
               <l>Brightly the river glistens in the sun,</l>
               <l>Running towards the sea—the glowing sea,</l>
               <l>That spreads its waveless breast, whereon the ships</l>
               <l>Lie moveless ; cables, masts, and furled shrouds </l>
               <l>Thro’ the clear atmosphere distinctly seen.</l>

               <l>The tribes of lower nature, even the mass</l>
               <l>Of this material world,—rocks, hills, and vales,</l>
               <l>Forests and rivers, seem to understand</l>
               <l>Or feel the influence of this holy day.</l>
               <l>All strife is hushed : at frequent intervals</l>
               <l>A gushing music wakens in the air</l>
               <l>From tiny bills unseen ; upon the bough</l>
               <l>Of lofty beech tree, calm the raven sits</l>
               <l>Inactive, with bright eye, and glossy wing :</l>
               <l>The linnet, swinging on the topmost bough</l>
               <l>Of bloomy furze, is silent ; and the bee,</l>
               <l>Languidly humming on from flower to flower,</l>
               <l>Seems making music of its daily toil :—</l>
               <l>Yea, even this verdant mound, whereon I rest</l>
               <l>With meditative volume, seems to feel,—</l>
               <l>Op’ning its bells and daisies to the sun,—</l>
               <l>A kind of silent, tranquil happiness,</l>
               <l>Which may be deep, although it speaketh not.</l>

               <l>Over the summit of the dark green trees,</l>
               <l>Stretching aloft, the rural church’s spire,</l>
               <l>O’ertopp’d by glittering vane, is clearly seen,</l>
               <l>Amid the pure, clear atmosphere : within</l>
               <l>The habitants of all the hamlets round,</l>
               <l>Parents and children, youth and hoary eld,</l>
               <l>Decent, decked out in holiday attire,</l>
               <l>Lift up the tribute of devoted hearts,</l>
               <l>The best—the holiest of all offerings,</l>
               <l>To Him, the great Creator of them all,</l>
               <l>Who gave them life and being—eyes to see</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">The </seg>glories of the universal world,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">The </seg>beauties shower’d around them—hearts to feel</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">The </seg>tenderness of passion, all the joys</l>
               <l>That life in its relationships affords :</l>
               <l>And lofty souls, which, when this frame of clay,</l>
               <l>Melting, shall pass away, and be no more,</l>
               <l>Shall taste the glories of undying youth,</l>
               <l>And in its immortality be strong.</l>

               <l>Oh ! holy is the noon of sabbath day,</l>
               <l>Unbreathing ;—holier still its purple eve ;</l>
               <l>What time above the hills the western sun</l>
               <l>Shoots his long rays aslant ; and, in the wave,</l>
               <l>The elm trees throw their sombrous shadows far.</l>

               <l>Embalmed in Recollection’s silent eye</l>
               <l>Are many evenings such, more sweet, more soft,</l>
               <l>More richly beautiful, than ever more,</l>
               <l>—While being lights its sublunary lamp—</l>
               <l>Shall bless this heart of mine. Thro’ yellow fields,</l>
               <l>Green forests, and by gleaming waters blue,</l>
               <l>With those whom fate or friendship linked to me,</l>
               <l>Tell I the bliss of wandering ; every thought</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">For such a </seg>season uncongenial,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">For such a </seg>scene, exiled, and banished far,</l>
               <l>No earthly care to damp the joyous heart,</l>
               <l>In innocent mirth exulting, or destroy</l>
               <l>Visions of glory that—can never be !</l>

               <l>Our life is but a journey. Happy eves !</l>
               <l>Ye ne’er can be forgotten !—twined with youth</l>
               <l>In glorious recollection, ye arise ;</l>
               <l>The crimson of your sunshine on the hills,</l>
               <l>Your forests green, and waveless waters blue ;</l>
               <l>And holier still, and lovelier, feelings warm,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">That</seg> now are scarcely felt, and lofty hopes,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">That</seg>, like a rainbow, from the summer sky</l>
