               <l><hi rendition="#pom_10247_incid_small-caps">Fear</hi> haunts me like a sheeted ghost, there comes no rest to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">me</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>The swelling thoughts have sunk and fled which buoy’d my spirit <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">free</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>A form of ill, unchanging still, a dark embodied <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">shape</rhyme></l>
               <l>Weighs my crush’d heart, and grimly waits to shut me from e<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">scape</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>Dim-seen, as goul by starlight pale, gorged with his hideous <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">fare</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Yet all-distinct upon my soul there comes his wolfish <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">glare</rhyme>.</l>

               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> earth is like a grave to me, with vultures gather’d <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">by</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> though I breathe, my soul lies dead, and o’er it floats a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">troop</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Long-bill’d, of birds obscene and vile, prepared for bloody <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">swoop</rhyme>;</l>
               <l>One—fiercer, deadlier than them all—one gloats upon my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">heart</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And half I laugh in bitter joy, to think no blood will <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">start</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>No blood, no blood to wet his maw ! that blessed torrent’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">flow</rhyme></l>
               <l>Was suck’d by countless beaks and bills,—dried up long years a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">go</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>’Tis thus I dream, yet not in sleep ; for sleep, the torturer, <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">brings</rhyme></l>
               <l>Before my closed eyes a train of bright and noble <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">things</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>The smiles of maidens fair and young, the glance of beauty <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">bright</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And tones remember’d long ago,—all fill me with de<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">light</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>I quite forget in present ease the torture and the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">chain</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>A dream is mine. Sweet, mellow, faint, as if from o’er the <rhyme label="a" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">sea</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Or some calm lake, at evening heard, when hush’d the breezes <rhyme label="a" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">be</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>A strain begins,—and o’er mine ear the blessed music <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">falls</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Bathing my heart, as moonlight bathes some donjon’s craggy <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">walls</rhyme> ;</l>

               <l>A spell of power—a talisman each anguish to al<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">lay</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>And memory’s wand brings back again the long-departed <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">day</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>The proud young time, when, free as air, I walk’d beneath the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">moon</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And listen’d to one gentle voice that sung its witching <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">tune</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>I bend, in sleep, to kiss her brow, as ends that falling <rhyme label="j" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">strain</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>Gone ! Gone !—The agony comes on !—The fiend is here a<rhyme label="j" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">gain</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>Close, close beside me glooms the form that haunts me night and <rhyme label="l" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">day</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>The phantom stands beside my bed, in morning’s twilight <rhyme label="l" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">grey</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Dim, undefined, and terrible. Ah ! well my thrilling <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">blood</rhyme></l>
               <l>Told me that, foe to human kind, a demon near me <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="n">stood</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>It spoke at last : and o’er my soul death’s deep’ning shadows <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">flit</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>“ I takes ye up for debt,” it said, “ and this-here is the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">writ</rhyme>.”</l>
