               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora"><hi rendition="#pom_6550_incid_small-caps">The</hi> night is over</seg>—open wide the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="a">shutter</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">The night is over</seg>, and the dismal <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">rain</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>Only the wild winds sob, and wail, and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="a">mutter</rhyme></l>
               <l>Like mighty spirits tired out with <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">pain</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>The storm is over ; I lie still and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">wait</rhyme></l>
               <l>For an old friend I have not seen of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">late</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Thank God, those phantoms of the past are <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="d">fleeting</rhyme></l>
               <l>Before the sweep of the Death-angel’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">wings</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>So I can lie in peace, with failing <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">breath</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And calmly wait till you approach—or <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">Death</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>’Twas very dreary when, of all for<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="g">saken</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>You left me trembling in the cold a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">lone</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>But Death was kinder far, and he has <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="g">taken</rhyme></l>
               <l>The hand you dropped so coldly from your <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">own</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And leads me—closing my world-wearied <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">eyes</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>To his still shore, which hath no memo<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">ries</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>What will it matter, when we meet in <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="j">heaven</rhyme> ?</l>
               <l>We shall not hear Life’s angry billows <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">roar</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>This little bark, too rudely tempest-<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="j">driven</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Casts anchor sooner where the storms are <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="k">o’er</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>E’en now, those waves have left on Memory’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">shore</rhyme></l>
               <l rendition="#pom_6550_incid_line-break">Meek thoughts, like pearl-shells scattered, nothing <lb/><rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">more</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>And, oh, forgive her, as I have for<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="l">given</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Who came between us with her cruel <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">art</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>It will not matter, when we meet in <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="l">heaven</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>That our brief lives on earth were spent a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">part</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>And then to love—and know that love is <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">vain</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>What wonder she was mad with rage and <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">pain</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>Methinks I should know something of that <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="n">sorrow</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Burning like fire on the heart and <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">brain</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>I, too, with trembling hand, have sought to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="n">borrow</rhyme></l>
               <l>Mirth’s blushing roses for a brow of <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">pain</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Though all these dreary years the world’s cold <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">eye</rhyme></l>
               <l>Has never read my secret—but I <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">die</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>But, ah ! my dear old friend, ’tis almost <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="p">over</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>The long, long struggle between pride and <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">pain</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And neither slandering foe nor doubting <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="p">lover</rhyme></l>
               <l>Has power to grieve me any more a<rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">gain</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>For God’s great angel having touched mine <rhyme label="i" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">eyes</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>I read the meaning of those tears and <rhyme label="i" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">sighs</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>We shall not meet ; my latest hours are <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="q">flying</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>Ere sets yon sun upon the darkened <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="r">land</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Yet will I clasp one flower close in <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="q">dying</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>That you may take it from my cold, still <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="r">hand</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> keep it as a sign of wrong for<rhyme label="l" type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">given</rhyme>,</l>

               <l>So you may, turning from that dreary <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">past</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Look onward, with a firm untroubled <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">brow</rhyme>,</l>
