               <l><hi rendition="#pom_12439_incid_small-caps">Warm</hi> is the night and still ; the misty clouds</l>
               <l>Obscure the moon so that there scarce is light</l>
               <l>Left in the world ; all round, the silent hills</l>
               <l>Sleep mystically ; and no night-haunting bird</l>
               <l>Startles the glooming trees with mournful cry.</l>
               <l>Silent the harbour sleeps, but myriad lights</l>
               <l>Spread, phosphorescent, out from shore to shore—</l>
               <l>Ripples and streaks of fire that live and die</l>
               <l>Moment by moment, till the waters seem</l>
               <l>Like to a sky of darkest purply-blue</l>
               <l>Turned upside-down, and thick with silver stars.</l>

               <l>Like silver phantoms round the weedy piles</l>
               <l>Of the dim-lighted wharf the fishes pass</l>
               <l>In endless-seeming lines from right to left,</l>
               <l>Ever the one direction following. Far away,</l>
               <l>And faint with distance, through the moonless air</l>
               <l>The steamer’s whistle sounds ; anon her lights</l>
               <l>Shine, dim and misty, as she rounds the point,</l>
               <l>While answering lights glare out upon the wharf.</l>
               <l>She nearer comes—the water ’neath her bows</l>
               <l>Is streaked with trembling lines of green and red</l>
               <l>And golden hues, that broad and broader grow</l>
               <l>As on she creeps, a larger-looming form</l>
               <l>Whose ever-throbbing engines beat and beat.</l>

               <l>Now in her path the ghost-like silver fish—</l>
               <l>With sound of quick and sudden little waves</l>
               <l>Rising and flapping on a sandy shore—</l>
               <l>Affrighted leap ; then for a moment sound</l>
               <l>Dies all away, and then breaks forth again</l>
               <l>In throb of engines, shouts, and rattling chains,</l>
               <l>And hissing steam, as to the trembling wharf</l>
               <l>The vessel is made fast, The flaring lamps</l>
               <l>Flicker and flame in the soft rainy air,</l>
               <l>And cast a glow upon the busy scene</l>
               <l>Of loading and unloading ; silence flies</l>
               <l>Into the darkest hollows of the hills.</l>
