               <l>Draws me towards yonder desolate dark cave</l>
               <l>On the dim mountain side, where steps of men,</l>
               <l>Of wandering shepherds, homeward to the fold</l>
               <l>Guiding their weary flocks at eventide,</l>
               <l>Approach not—even the place where I must die.</l>
               <l>And thou, O Hœmon ! whom amidst the youth—</l>
               <l>The chosen youth of Thebes—I have so loved</l>
               <l>And given my virgin heart, remember me</l>
               <l>With calm thoughts of that unforgotten time,</l>
               <l>Long hoped-for, but now lost, for ever lost—</l>
               <l>Yield not thy soul to a passionate despair.</l>
               <l>The sunlight, or the eternal roll and change</l>
               <l>Of gracious seasons—or the pitying stars</l>
               <l>Which light me, moving towards perpetual night—</l>
               <l>Or sad Ismene, with her fruitless prayer</l>
               <l>For mercy—or the anguish in thy soul</l>
               <l>Scares not the awful shadow, which not yet</l>
               <l>Has ceased to hover, spreading fatal wings</l>
               <l>O’er the doomed race of wretched Œdipus.</l>
               <l>Ah me, unhappy ! retribution comes—</l>
               <l>Stalking in gloom thro’ melancholy halls</l>
               <l>Once beautiful, the stateliest in the land—</l>
               <l>Thy home now, cruel Creon ; yet my crime</l>
               <l>Is not my shame, but thine ; for I behold</l>
               <l>Polynices the beloved one on the shore</l>
               <l>In the silent land of shadows, and I come.</l>
               <l>Lo ! I depart thro’ the dim wavering gates</l>
               <l>The mist-like portals of that Autumn realm,</l>
               <l>Where mighty Orcus reigns ; and the stern queen</l>
               <l>Persephoné, who rules, with sceptre pale</l>
               <l>And calm eternal eyes, the gliding shades</l>
               <l>That wail around the shores of Acheron—</l>
               <l>Calls me, with sweet sad voice to take my place</l>
               <l>In divine dells, and glades of happy rest.</l>
