               <l><hi rendition="#pom_1119_incid_small-caps">Sweet</hi> little friend in hours of lonely thought,</l>
               <l>And studious toil thro’ the unresting day,</l>
               <l>Why hast thou left me to the sullen hours,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_1119_incid_line-break">So dull and changeless now ? Thy light-heart<lb/>song,</l>
               <l>And fluttering plume of joy, beguile no more</l>
               <l>My weary mind, happy when so estranged,</l>
               <l>From books, which are the bane of all repose.</l>

               <l>All these are past, and joy takes wing with thee.</l>

               <l>Still was I pondering o’er the murky page,</l>
               <l>Hast thou attracted notice by thy bill</l>

               <l>The clos’d—and then, bright little eye, half-oped,</l>
               <l>Well have I read thy meaning, and full soon,</l>
               <l>Thus warned of needful slumber, borne away</l>
               <l>The wasted lamp, and sought my lonely couch.</l>

               <l>To calls and questionings of the heart—the mind—</l>
               <l>All show me thou art dead—for ever gone !</l>
               <l>I stand and gaze on thy perplexing cage—</l>

               <l>And before which, returning after years,</l>
               <l>We pause, and think of hours enjoyed within ;</l>
               <l>And gaze upon the dusty shutters—closed !</l>
