               <l>Downwards came the whirling waters ;</l>
               <l>Deep and black the river <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">rolled</rhyme> :</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">Not a</seg> dog beneath the tempest ;</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">Not a</seg> beggar upon his <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">beat</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>Wind and Rain, and Cold and Darkness,</l>
               <l>Swept through every desert <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">street</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Muffled to the teeth, that evening</l>
               <l>I was struggling in the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">storm</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Through pestilent lanes and hungry alleys :</l>
               <l>Suddenly,—an Ancient <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">Form</rhyme></l>
               <l>Peered from out a gloomy doorway,</l>
               <l>And, with trembling croak, it <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">said</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>“ In the left-hand empty garret</l>
               <l>You will find a woman— <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">dead</rhyme>.”</l>

            <note> * About ten years ago, a paragraph appeared in some of the daily newspapers,<lb/> giving an account of an inquest held on the body
               of a young woman, “ found <lb/> dead,” in some obscure street or lane in London.  The body was discovered<lb/> frightfully emaciated,
               scantily clothed, and in a poor garret, which was entirely<lb/> destitute of every g#ticle of furniture comfort or otherwise, except a
               few ragged<lb/> love-letters of had preserved though every privation.  According to the<lb/> evidence, she been at one time a person of
               considerable beauty, and had<lb/> evidently died of hunger.</note>

               <l>“ Never stepped a finer creature,</l>
               <l>When she was a simple <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">maid</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>But she did like many others,—</l>
               <l>Loved a man, and was be<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">trayed</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>I have seen her in her carriage</l>
               <l>Riding, diamonds in her <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">hair</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>And I’ve seen her starving (starving,</l>
               <l>Do you hear ?) and now—<emph>she’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">there</rhyme> !</emph>”</l>

               <l>Famine, Filth, and mean De<rhyme label="f" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">spair</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Round about the darkness <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">hung</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>No kind vision met my glances,</l>
               <l>Friend or helper of the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">poor</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>So the crazy room I entered,</l>
               <l>And looked down upon the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">floor</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>There,—on the rough and naked boards,</l>
               <l>A long, gaunt, wasted figure <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">lay</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Murdered in its youth by Hunger,</l>
               <l>All its beauty—wrinkled <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">clay</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>Life’s poor wants had left her nothing,</l>
               <l>Clothes nor fuel, food nor <rhyme label="d" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">bed</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><emph>Nothing</emph>—save some ragged letters</l>
               <l>Whereon lay the ghastly <rhyme label="d" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">head</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>(Sweet, though every word a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">lie</rhyme>) ?</l>
