               <l rendition="#pom_19187_incid_indent">And gold was as nothing to golden <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">hair</rhyme>,</l>

               <l>Two mortals met in a forest <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">glade</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>A King fell in love with a Beggar-<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">maid</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Dried by the wind and drenched with the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">dew</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">Her</seg> dress was a wonderful washed-out <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">blue</rhyme> ;</l>

               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">Her</seg> shadowy face was pallid and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">thin</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>But gold was the frame that it glimmered <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">in</rhyme> ;</l>

               <l>In the thick wood, far away from the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">town</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>She gathered great heaps of the fir-cones <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">brown</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Whilst the idle folk in the market-<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">place</rhyme></l>
               <l>Gave alms for the joy of her lovely <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">face</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>When the world was young and golden and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">green</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>The Beggar-maid loved and became a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">Queen</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>With never a sigh for the forest <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">shades</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Nor a tear for its dim-lit colon<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">nades</rhyme>,</l>

               <l>She went forth to live amongst men, and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">reign</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Thronèd in vanity, over the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">vain</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>In flowing garments of velvet and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">vair</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>With a crown of gold on her golden <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">hair</rhyme>,</l>
            </lg>
            <lg rhyme="mm">
               <l>She sat on an ivory throne all <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">day</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Till the world grew weary and old and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">gray</rhyme> ;</l>

               <l>She sat on her ivory throne and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">sighed</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>‘ The palace is narrow, the world is <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">wide</rhyme>.’</l>

               <l>On golden dishes the Feast was <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">spread</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>But she longed for her wayside crust of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">bread</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Her robes were of velvet, through and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">through</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>But she sighed for a gown of washed-out <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">blue</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>‘ Alas ! ’ she said, and ‘ I would I were <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="q">free</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>For love is but dust and ashes to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="q">me</rhyme>.’</l>

               <l>‘ Ah, the Queen is dead ! ’ said the Beggar-<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">maid</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>And away she fled in the night a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">lone</rhyme> ;</l>

               <l>‘ The walls of the city are narrow and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">strong</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Bringing great peace to the cowardly <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">throng</rhyme>,</l>
            </lg>
            <lg rhyme="nn">
               <l>‘ When the battle raged in the plain out<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">side</rhyme></l>
               <l>And many a patriot fought and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">died</rhyme>.</l>
            </lg>

               <l>‘ The walls of the city the foe with<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">stood</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>Better I love the green walls of the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">wood</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>‘ The gates of the palace are carven <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">fair</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>All gateless stands the blue arch of the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">air</rhyme> ;</l>

               <l>‘ The castle ramparts are stately and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="v">high</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>No fort defends the free dome of the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="v">sky</rhyme> ;</l>

            <lg rhyme="ww">
               <l>‘ The King’s hall is guarded by bolt and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="w">bar</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Behold, I am free as the wild things <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="w">are</rhyme> !</l>
            </lg>
            <lg rhyme="ll">
               <l>‘ Alas, for all souls bound fast with a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">chain</rhyme></l>
               <l>To the wheel of Fortune—the wheel of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">pain</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>‘ At the heart of the city the goddess <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="x">stands</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Turning and turning with blood-stained <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="x">hands</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>‘ My soul grows weary, my senses <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="y">reel</rhyme></l>
               <l>At the giddy round of the whirling <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="y">wheel</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>‘ The people rejoice that the wheel flies <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="z">fast</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>But all men are ground in the dust at <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="z">last</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>‘ The voice of the forest is low and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a1">sweet</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>I will tread the dead leaves under my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a1">feet</rhyme> ;</l>
            </lg>
            <lg rhyme="gg">
               <l>‘ Where great boughs shiver and sway in the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">breeze</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>The bracken shall rustle about my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">knees</rhyme>.</l>
