            <p><hi rendition="#pom_14846_hidden #pom_14846_incid_showInline">[</hi>Not many years ago a King died in the Rajpoot
               States. His<lb/>wives, disregarding the orders of the English against <emph>suttee</emph>, would<lb/>have broken out of the palace had
               not the gates been barred. But<lb/>one of them, disguised as the King’s favourite dancing-girl, passed<lb/>through the line of guards
               and reached the pyre. There her courage<lb/>failing, she prayed her cousin, a baron of the court, to kill her.<lb/>This he did, not
               knowing who she was.<hi rendition="#pom_14846_hidden #pom_14846_incid_showInline">]</hi></p>

               <l>For the soul of the dying Rajpoot <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">King</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">All night</seg> beat up from the women’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">wing</rhyme></l>
               <l>A cry that we could not <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">still</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Mewar headstall and Marwar <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">mail</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>That clinked in the palace <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">yard</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Behind the grim zenana-<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">bars</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>When they knew that the King was <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">dead</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>The dumb priest knelt to tie his mouth</l>
               <l>And robe him for the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">pyre</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>The Boondi Queen beneath us <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">cried</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>“ See, now, that we die as our mothers <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">died</rhyme></l>
               <l>“ In the bridal bed, by our master’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">side</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>“ Out, women !—to the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">fire</rhyme> !”</l>

               <l>We drove the great gates home apace ;</l>
               <l>White hands were on the <rhyme label="a" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">sill</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>But ere the rush of the unseen <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">feet</rhyme></l>
               <l>Had reached the turn to the open <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">street</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>The bars shot back, the guard-drum <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">beat</rhyme>—</l>

               <l>“ Azizun, the Lucknow nautch-girl, <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">I</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>“ When the house is rotten, the rats must <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">fly</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>“ And I seek another <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">thrall</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>“ For I ruled the King as ne’er did Queen,—</l>
               <l>“ To-night the Queens rule <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">me</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>“ Guard them safely, but let me <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">go</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>“ Or ever they pay the debt they <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">owe</rhyme></l>
               <l>“ In scourge and torture !”—She leaped be<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">low</rhyme>,</l>

               <l>A woman, who veiled her head and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">wept</rhyme>,</l>

               <l>“ To the wanton will of a harlot’s <rhyme label="r" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">hand</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>“ Will the white ash rise from the blistered <rhyme label="r" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">brand</rhyme> ?</l>
               <l>“ Stoop down, and call him <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="x">now</rhyme> !”</l>

               <l>“ With base-born blood of a trade a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="z">bhorred</rhyme> ”–</l>
               <l>And the Thakur answered, “ <rhyme label="m" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">Aye</rhyme>.”</l>
