               Foreign Gallery, No. 122. It was the<lb/>custom, during the times of the Empire, for each suc-<lb/>cessive troop of gladiators, before
               beginning their con-<lb/>flict, to advance to the Imperial boxs when the Emperor<lb/>was present, and to salute him with the words, “
                  <foreign xml:lang="la">Ave,<lb/>Cæsar Imperator ; morituri te salutant.</foreign>”]</p>
