               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Alone in her remotest myrtle <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">groves</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Sighing unheard, by loving eyes un<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">seen</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">No living creature but two turtle-<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="b">doves</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Who sit dejected, ruffled ; ne’er a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">coo</rhyme></l>

               <l>In which, oh, shame ! is seen a thread of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">grey</rhyme>,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Is making low her ’plaint for glories <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">gone</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>She wrings her hands and sighs : “ Ah, lacka<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">day</rhyme> !</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">To think that Venus should be so for<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="f">lorn</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>Echo, that lazy nymph, now seldom <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">brings</rhyme></l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">A message. Says the world’s so full of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="h">noises</rhyme></l>
               <l>She gets confused with wheels and guns and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">things</rhyme>,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">And mixes up machines and human <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="h">voices</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>To Vulcan once I sent her with my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">love</rhyme>,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">But she brought back the answer with a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">roar</rhyme></l>
               <l>Which made my head ache, and quite shook my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="i">grove</rhyme>,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Saying that he was busy ; ’twasn’t <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">kind</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>I’m sure he never shouted so be<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">fore</rhyme>.</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Mars is no good, for he’s been put, I <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">find</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>In a museum of ancient armour. <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">Why</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Why am I ’reft of all to waste and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">sigh</rhyme>,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">And look with longing eyes across the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">sea</rhyme> ?</l>
               <l>O blest Thetis ! from whose jewelled <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">breast</rhyme></l>
               <l>I floated into life and love most <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">blest</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Help me again ! Once more I call to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">thee</rhyme>.</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Last time I called thou didst but mock at <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">me</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And sent’st a black man whom they called O<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="o">thello</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>I’d my revenge on him, the cross-grained <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="o">fellow</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>O Ocean Mother ! I am thin and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="p">weak</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">My</seg> lips are cold, all faded is my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="p">cheek</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">My</seg> beauty’s gone : what can the world be <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="q">doing</rhyme>
                  ?</l>
               <l>This Nineteenth Century has been my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="q">ruin</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>By Neptune, any one who has a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="s">hand</rhyme></l>
               <l>In bringing clumsy ironclads to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="s">land</rhyme> !</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">I see them making for my private <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="r">cove</rhyme>.”</l>

               <l>And tries to make herself a little <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">neat</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>She bathes her eyes, and combs her fragrant <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">hair</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And then considers what she’s got to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">wear</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>She takes her cestus and a gleaming pearl or <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">two</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>It’s very simple, and, alas ! not very <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">new</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>But most becoming is it as she there doth <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="s">stand</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Gazing expectant whilst the strangers <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="s">land</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>Footsteps approach—the doves in panic <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">fly</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>A look of fear is seen in Venus’ <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">eye</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>“ What means this tremor ? ” thinks the trembling <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">Queen</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>“ I’m much more frightened than I’ve ever <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">been</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>I too have nerves ! Oh, Aphrodite ! <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">shame</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>How can the Queen of Cyprus be so <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">tame</rhyme> ? ”</l>

               <l>A being strange, unseen, undreamt ere <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="v">now</rhyme>,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Is standing in the sacred myrtle <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="r">grove</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>It does not kneel, nor even does it <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="v">bow</rhyme></l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Before the sovereign of the realms of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="r">Love</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>Stern, cold, majestic, is it he or <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">she</rhyme> ?</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">That with sharp scrutiny and scornful <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="w">smile</rhyme></l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Confronts poor trembling Venus, who mean<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="w">while</rhyme></l>
               <l>Stands speechless and with shaking lip and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">knee</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>Her tender eyes uplifted were in fear,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">And wonder at the strangeness of her <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">guest</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>Then minding hospitality, she softly said,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">“ Sir, will it please you to come in and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">rest</rhyme> ?
                  ”</l>
               <l>The being, gazing grim with eyes of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="x">stone</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Replied, “ What ! you here still ? I thought you’d <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="x">gone</rhyme></l>
               <l>With other fragments of the obso<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">lete</rhyme>,</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">And all the refuse of the idle <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="y">years</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>’Tis passing strange that you and I should <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">meet</rhyme> !</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Put on some clothes, girl, and let’s have no <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="y">tears</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Either you go, or help me, for I’ve lots to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">do</rhyme>.”</l>
               <l>Quoth Venus faintly, “ Who and what are <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">you</rhyme> ? ”</l>
               <l>“ <emph>Woman</emph> am I,” the other said, “ regenerate and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">free</rhyme> ! ”</l>
               <l>Thinks Venus, “ I am woman surely, but she’s not like <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">me</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>That hideous coat ! No broidery or <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="z">frill</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>Nay, really, dress like that I never <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="z">will</rhyme>.”</l>

               <l>But she so meek and timorous had <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="x">grown</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">She</seg> durst not speak ; her queenliness all <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="x">gone</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">She</seg> gazed submissively in patient <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a1">guise</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>On Woman’s all unloyely lips and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a1">eyes</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Whilst that one spoke—“ You’d better take a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b1">book</rhyme>.</l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent">Here’s Huxley, Helenboltz, Darwin, and the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">rest</rhyme>
                  :</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">Or</seg>, if you can’t read, why then you’ll have to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b1">cook</rhyme></l>
               <l rendition="#pom_17704_indent"><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">Or</seg> sew, for really I must have you <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">dressed</rhyme>.”</l>
               <l>Poor Venus then with trembling hand did <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c1">turn</rhyme></l>
               <l>An awful page ; but how her cheeks did <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c1">burn</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And floods of bitter tears her eyes did <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d1">blur</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>It was too hard ; that is, it was not Greek to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d1">her</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>“ Oh ! then I see the line that I must <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e1">take</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And soon you shall some fitting garments <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e1">make</rhyme></l>
               <l>To hide those limbs of which you seem so <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f1">proud</rhyme>.”</l>
               <l>And Woman’s voice did here grow hard and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f1">loud</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Those tender little feet, that gods have <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h1">kissed</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Are hid from sight by ugly shoes of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="h1">list</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>Her form, that erst was round and soft and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">fair</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Now shrunken is with grief and sick de<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">spair</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And trembles in a dingy gown of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i1">brown</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>From her sad eyes soft tears are streaming <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i1">down</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>Her stern taskmistress gives her good ad<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j1">vice</rhyme>,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> shows her how bake bread and how boil <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j1">rice</rhyme>,</l>

               <l>She starts her fav’rite topic—ruling <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k1">men</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>Whereat doth Venus turn two mocking <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a1">eyes</rhyme></l>
               <l>Upon the new man-ruler grave and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a1">wise</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>All dimpling round her mouth the smiles do <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l1">come</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And soon those coral lips that have been <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l1">dumb</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>She, the old Laughter-loving quite re<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m1">veals</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And down the rocky vale, sweet crystal <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m1">peals</rhyme></l>
