               <l><hi rendition="#pom_18033_incid_small-caps">I saw</hi> them playing, years ago,</l>
               <l>A lad and a maiden <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">fair</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>He with his close-cropped curly head,</l>
               <l>She with her flying <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">hair</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>And the joyous sound of their game went up</l>
               <l>Through the summer-sunshine <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">air</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>I spake to the umpire tall and gaunt</l>
               <l>Who watched them as they <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">strove</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>“ How goes the game ? ”—Not an instant he</l>
               <l>From the play his eyes would <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="b">move</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>But he answered, with a curious laugh,</l>
               <l>“ The game as yet is—<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="b">Love</rhyme> ! ”</l>

               <l>I came again and stood beside</l>
               <l>This man who watched the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">game</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>It seemed to me that years had passed—</l>
               <l>Yet the players were the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">same</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>But the maiden now was a woman grown,</l>
               <l>And the lad had a man’s broad <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="c">frame</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>They were playing in earnest now, those two—</l>
               <l>I thought, for a heavy <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">bet</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>Fighting a silent, earnest fight,</l>
               <l>With faces flushed and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">set</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>And the man was doing his best to score,</l>
               <l>But the girl—she held him <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">yet</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>But the umpire favoured the man throughout ;</l>
               <l>It was a bitter <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">shame</rhyme></l>
               <l>To hear how he added points to his score</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> allowed him every <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">claim</rhyme> :</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> the player sent him at times a wink—</l>
               <l>I said, “ How stands the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">game</rhyme> ? ”</l>

               <l>He held his sides with sudden mirth—</l>
               <l>“ I call it Deuce up <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="a">here</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>But down at home I’ve a jovial crew ;</l>
               <l>We call it different <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">there</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>Yes, a very different word we use—</l>
               <l>You may hear it, if you <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="a">care</rhyme> ? ”</l>

               <l>The umpire had a curious tone</l>
               <l>That set me ill at <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">ease</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>I turned away to cool my brow</l>
               <l>In the sough of the evening <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">breeze</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>But I knew that the girl had missed her stroke,</l>
               <l>Through the umpire’s well-timed <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">sneeze</rhyme> !</l>

            <lg rhyme="-g-g-g">
               <l>And then I heard her hard, high voice,</l>
               <l>Speaking reckless<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">ly</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>“ I am tired—let us make an end at last ;</l>
               <l>This long game wearies <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">me</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>Let us make it Sudden Death ! ” and the man—</l>
               <l>“ If you will, so let it <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">be</rhyme>.”</l>
            </lg>
            <lg rhyme="-h-h-h">
               <l>I turned in haste to see the close,</l>
               <l>But the headlong game was <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">done</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>The umpire was shaking his man by the hand,</l>
               <l>But the girl’s fair face was <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="h">gone</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>“ Aha ! ” cried the umpire, slapping his thigh,</l>
               <l>“ ’Twas a noble stake I <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">won</rhyme> ! ”</l>

               <l>He passed away through the twilight woods</l>
               <l>And flourished a glowing <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">prong</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>The boughs swept off his cap from his head—</l>
               <l>Hoo !—but his horns were <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">long</rhyme> !</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> a tail straggled out from under his cloak,</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> trailed as he went a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">long</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> as he went, he capered and sang,</l>
               <l>Yea, sang this grisly <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">song</rhyme> :—</l>

               <l>“ Hey for the soul of a maiden fair,</l>
               <l>’Tis a noble stake to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">play</rhyme> !</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">If she win</seg> there is little that she may win ;</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora dvpp:sdVariant">If she lose</seg>, there’s the Devil to <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">pay</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>She <emph>would</emph> play it out ; she trusted her luck,</l>
               <l>And her play was strong and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="k">steady</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>But she played for a young man’s hidden heart—</l>
               <l>Poor fool ! it was <emph>Mine al<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="k">ready</rhyme> !</emph></l>
               <l>Ho ho, ho <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">ho</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>Ho ho, ho <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeIdentical" label="l">ho</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>The fool ! it was Mine al<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="k">ready</rhyme>.”</l>
