               <l>My gallant James had all my heart,</l>
               <l>John was my parents’ <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeFeminine" label="a">choosing</rhyme> !</l>

               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">I had not been</seg> the Lord of Shane’s</l>
               <l>Twelve months and barely <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">three</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>When he left me a widow young,</l>
               <l>With a baby at my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="b">knee</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>When my old love he sought me out,</l>
               <l>And James did comfort <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">me</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Then every thing a new life took,</l>

               <l>Another baby boy I had,</l>
               <l>With his dear father’s <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">eyes</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And mimic smiles, to cause my heart</l>
               <l>Perpetual sweet sur<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="d">prise</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>But James had fortune still to seek</l>
               <l><seg ana="dvpp:sdAnaphora">And</seg> must his land for<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">sake</rhyme>,</l>

               <l>Must follow in his <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="e">wake</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>So with my babes I sailed across</l>
               <l>The fickle summer <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">sea</rhyme> ;</l>
               <l>It seemed to me I left no loss,</l>
               <l>My heart leapt forward, <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">he</rhyme></l>
               <l>Stood where the western waters toss,</l>
               <l>And beckoned on to me.</l>

               <l>John prattled of the sea, the babe</l>
               <l>Crowed at the dashing <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">foam</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>We trod a grave we thought not of,</l>
               <l>And left behind a <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="f">home</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>But madly dashed the waves one night,</l>
               <l>Up to the heavens, and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">back</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>Ah, dreadful mingled sea and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">sky</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And fearful waters, mountains <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="h">high</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Closed round, and hid our <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="g">track</rhyme> !</l>
            </lg>
            <lg rhyme="-i-i">
               <l>Up to the deck each soul, aghast,</l>
               <l>Crowded in fierce de<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">spair</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>To try—last hope !—if e’er a rope</l>
               <l>Might reach the land off <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="i">there</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>Two dogs had in that boiling <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">tide</rhyme></l>
               <l>Struggled, striven, toiled, and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="j">died</rhyme> :</l>
               <l>A mastiff only, now re<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">mained</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>On whom each desperate eye was <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="k">strained</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>He won : how each upon that rope</l>
               <l>Himself in maddest hurry <rhyme label="c" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">flung</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>Oh ! how they jostled, swore, and shrieked,</l>
               <l>And firm, and firmer <rhyme label="c" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">clung</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>A greater wretch than any there—</l>
               <l>Two children in my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">arms</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>I struggled on to just half way,</l>
               <l>Strong with intense a<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="l">larms</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Just half the way, and then I found</l>
               <l>I could, alas ! no <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="m">more</rhyme>—</l>
               <l>“ Save John” some screamed,</l>
               <l>“ For with the babe,</l>
               <l>It will be quicklier <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="m">o’er</rhyme>.”</l>

               <l>Oh baby ! baby ! thy dear hand</l>
               <l>Was close around my <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">neck</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>Ah ! what so precious to be saved</l>
               <l>Of all that mighty <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="n">wreck</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>Came one great swell, a cry of <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="o">fright</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And then,—the waters dashed him <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeHalf" label="p">past</rhyme> ;—</l>

               <l>Turn to me with upbraiding <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="q">frown</rhyme></l>
               <l>Of grave and strange sur<rhyme label="d" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">prise</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>But I was maddened at the time,</l>
               <l>With panting sobs I struggled <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="r">on</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And brought the baby safe to shore ;—</l>
               <l>But peace was lost with <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="r">John</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>While through his hair, with sea-weed mixed,</l>
               <l>The sea-worms creep and <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="s">play</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>“ ’Twas cruel, Mother, when you knew</l>
               <l>The drowning pangs t’would <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">dost</rhyme>,</l>
               <l>And little baby in the waves</l>
               <l>Be in a moment <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="t">lost</rhyme>.</l>
               <l>One would not think that you would then</l>
               <l>Care which you treasured <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeEye" label="t">most</rhyme> !</l>

               <l>“ Ah ! if I had my brother’s eyes !</l>
               <l>Or if I had not <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">mine</rhyme> !—</l>
               <l>I had not then been left to lie</l>
               <l>Tossing amidst the <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="u">brine</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>Oh ! Mother ! all day long the worms</l>
               <l>Around my body twine !</l>

               <l>You would not think how sad it is</l>
               <l>To have a watery <rhyme label="u" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">grave</rhyme>.”</l>

               <l>Then do I raise my weeping face,</l>
               <l>“ Oh, John, I did love <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">thee</rhyme> !</l>
               <l>I was an hour of mad uproar</l>
               <l>And sore extremi<rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeHalf dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">ty</rhyme>.”</l>
               <l>But ever sobbing stands my boy,</l>
               <l>And shakes his head at <rhyme label="b" type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine dvpp:rhymeCrossStanza">me</rhyme>.</l>

               <l>The earth is desert for his sale :</l>
               <l>His sire in heaven de<rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="v">mands</rhyme></l>
               <l>My condemnation, who refused</l>
               <l>Those little pleading <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="v">hands</rhyme> ;—</l>
               <l>The twilight deepens into night ;—</l>
               <l>See ! yonder ;——where he <rhyme type="dvpp:rhymeMasculine" label="v">stands</rhyme> !</l>
