Two prophets stand forth in the market-place1
At Wittenberg to draw the wise regard,2
Both broad-browed thinkers of the Teuton race,3
Both crowned with Fame’s unbought, unsonght reward.4
Two prophets like, yet how unlike ! the same5
In work, but not in function ; he to fan6
The strength more apt of the long smothered flame,7
To temper he, and guide with chastened plan.8

Thus fiery Peter, erst at gospel call,9
Drew in one yoke with gentle-thoughted John ;10
Thus toiled beneath one battle’s sulphurous pall11
Hot-blooded Blücher and cool Wellington ;12
And they are wise who read this text in all—13
Man’s ways are many, but God’s work is one.14
