The tree of the valley1
Waves gracefully round,2
Its green leaves in beauty3
Adorning the ground !4
But dark ’neath its verdure5
The broken bough grieves ;6
And deep are its storm-wounds,7
Though hid by the leaves !8
’Tis thus with ourselves,9
To the world we appear10
All smiles, as unknowing11
A sigh, or a tear !12
And little they think,13
Whom the light laugh beguiles,14
That hearts which are breaking15
Hide sorrow ’neath smiles !16
