Home they brought her warrior dead :1
She nor swoon’d nor uttered cry :2
All her maidens, watching, said,3
“ She must weep or she will die.”4
Then they praised him, soft and low,5
Call’d him worthy to be loved,6
Truest friend and noblest foe ;7
Yet she neither spoke nor moved.8
Stole a maiden from her place,9
Lightly to the warrior stept,10
Took the face-cloth from the face ;11
Yet she neither moved nor wept.12
Rose a nurse of ninety years,13
Set his child upon her knee—14
Like summer tempest came her tears—15
“ Sweet my child, I live for thee.”16
