Journalist, editor, poet, and author. Born in Edinburgh. In 1831 worked for the Aberdeen Journal and then Aberdeen Advertiser. Became acquainted with Allan Cunningham in London. Edited many newspapers including the Western Watchman, Edinburgh Witness, and the Glasgow Daily Mail. Author of The Scottish Nation (1859–1863) and Genealogy and Surnames (1865). Poetry volumes include Poetical Aspirations (1830) and Landscape Lyrics (1839), and edited the 1839 annual Gift for all Seasons. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
