Poet and academic. Younger brother of the poet Edmund John Armstrong. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Assumed the additional surname of “Savage” upon the death of a maternal aunt. Professor of history and English literature at Queen’s College, Cork from 1870 to 1905. Received an honorary M. A. from Trinity College in 1872, followed by an honorary DLitt in 1891. Attacked the Irish literary revival movement and was severely criticised by W. B. Yeats for denigrating the Gaelic literary tradition. Married Marie Elizabeth Wrixon in 1879.
