Major Romantic poet and playwright. Born in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Moved to London in 1784 and was introduced to literary society by her aunt, the poet Anne Hunter. She published the first volume of Plays on the Passions anonymously in 1798, and put her name on the second volume published in 1802. Friends with Anna Barbauld and Walter Scott.
