Poet, journalist, memoirist, radical, and weaver. Often wrote in Lancashire dialect. Born in Middleton, Lancashire. Married Jemima Shepherd on 24 June 1810. Charged with treason several times, including for his involvement in the Peterloo Massacre on 16 August 1819, when he was imprisoned for a year. Employed in various occupations, including as Manchester correspondent for the Morning Herald (from 1826). Gave up journalism and other occupations in an attempt to make a living solely by writing from 1839, but continued to suffer severe financial hardship. In 1846 received a private subscription from supporters, and in 1864 an annuity from Manchester Liberals. Publications include The Weaver Boy, or, Miscellaneous Poetry (1819), The Queen’s Triumph (1820), and Homely Rhymes (1843). Biographical information: ODNB. (AC)
