Poet, travel writer, and watercolorist. Born at Balcarres, Fife. Father was James
Lindsay, fifth earl of Balcarres. Moved to London in 1781 and, with her sister, hosted
influential artistic and political salons. Married Andrew Barnard on 31 October 1793,
and moved with him to the Cape of Good Hope where Barnard took the colonial secretaryship
through Anne’s influence, and where Anne resumed her salon hosting. Composed the well-known
ballad Auld Robin Grey in 1771, later revealing her authorship to Walter Scott. Biographical information:
