Poet and businessman. Born in Drumeruil, Dumfriesshire. Father was a farmer on the Duke of Buccleuch’s Drumlanrig estate, and Bennoch also worked on the farm. Moved to London at age sixteen, and in 1837 started his own wholesale silk business. Supported schemes for civic improvement and was active in public service.
