Educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Left England in 1681 to travel to France, Switzerland,
Germany, Holland, as well as Padua, Italy, where he became a licensed doctor in 1684.
Returned to England in 1685 to begin his practice. Married Mary Adams on 9 February
1685. Became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1687. Physician-in-Ordinary
to the King. Knighted in 1697. Appointed censor of the College of Physicians in 1716.
