Medical doctor and poet. Frequently satirized as a bad poet. Born in Corsham, Wiltshire. Educated at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Left England in 1681 to travel to France, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, as well as Padua, Italy, where he became a licensed doctor in 1684. Returned to England in 1685 to begin his practice. Married Mary Adams on 9 February 1685. Became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1687. Physician-in-Ordinary to the King. Knighted in 1697.
