R. B.Trained as a physician. Joined the Savile Club in 1872, through which he met poet Edmund Gosse. After publishing his first volume of poems in 1873, ceased work as a physician to focus on writing. Married (Mary) Monica Waterhouse on 3 September 1884. Encouraged Mary Coleridge to publish her first poetry volume. Was the first editor of Gerard Manley Hopkins, whose poetry he published posthumously in 1918. Appointed Poet Laureate in 1913.
