Poet, Church of England clergyman, inspector of schools. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was friends with Arthur Hallam and Alfred Tennyson. Married Jane Octavia Elton in 1841. Worked as inspector of schools from 1848 to 1861. Became chaplain to Queen Victoria in 1860, and rector of Somerby, near Grantham, in 1861. Well-connected to major literary circles.
