Philosopher and poet. Born in Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire. Educated at the University of Edinburgh. Began working as a medical practitioner in 1806, but much preferred literature and philosophy. Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh from 1810. A founding member of the Edinburgh Review. Publications include The Bower of Spring, with Other Poems (1817).
