Poet, author, and lecturer. After graduating from Yale he visited Europe, witnessing the 1870 Franco-Prussian War in Paris, and then returning to the United States in 1871. Served as United States Consul in Edinburgh (1889-1893). Campaigned on behalf of Scottish Union soldiers in the American Civil War, including the commission of a commemorative monument in Edinburgh. Freemason, and Poet Laureate of Lodge Canongate Kilwinning. Publications include From the Hudson to the Yosemite (1884), Wayside Poems (1895), Leaves of Gold (1907).
