Poet and dramatist. Born in Lisbon into a noble family. A descendent of Vasco Pires de Camões, a nationalist troubadour and warrior. Son of Simão Vaz de Camões, who served in the royal army, and Dona Ana de Sá e Macedo. He might have been educated at the University of Coimbra. Stayed in the East (Goa, India) for seventeen years to serve King John III and gain a military status. He alluded to his journey and adventures in the East in his epic poem, Os Lusíadas (1572).
