Poet and political writer. Born in Ashburton, Devon. Son of William Carlile and Elizabeth (née Brookings). Worked as a tinplate worker and later hawked and wrote radical pamphlets, journals, and tracts in London. Married Jane Cousins on 24 May 1813, but separated in 1832, around the time of Carlile’s affair with Eliza Sharples, whom he lived with afterwards. Known for having founded several journals including The Republican, The Lion, The Phoenix, or, The Christian Advocate of Equal Knowledge, and the Christian Warrior, and for his work on popularizing the writings of Thomas Paine.
