Poet, educationalist, and penile reformer. Born into a Unitarian family. Began working as a governess in 1827 and founded a girls’ school with her mother, Anna Penn, in 1829, followed by a school in Kingswood in 1852, a girls’ reformatory school in 1854, and an industrial school in 1859. Founded the Working and Visiting Society in 1835. Visited the United States and Canada in 1873. Travelled to India multiple times in the 1860s and campaigned for increased education in India. Author of Reformatory Schools for the Children of the Perishing and Dangerous Classes, and for Juvenile Offenders (1851), Juvenile Delinquents, their Condition and Treatment (1853), and On the Principles of Education (1860).
