Poet. Younger sister of poet Alice Cary. Born in Hamilton County, Ohio, to parents who were farmers. Like her sister Alice, Phoebe had limited education. She co-authored with her sister The Poems of Alice and Phoebe Cary (1850) and, after its success, Phoebe joined her sister in New York City in 1855, where they hosted receptions at their home that were attended by major American writers. Phoebe was also the author of the poetry volumes Poems and Parodies (1854) and Poems of Faith, Hope, and Love (1868). Biographical information: ANB. (SP, AC)
