Poet, novelist, short story writer, and children’s author. Born in Hamilton County, Ohio, to parents who were farmers. Had a limited education. Sister of Phoebe Cary, with whom Alice authored Poems of Alice and Phoebe Cary (1849). After the book’s success, Alice moved to New York City in 1851, with Phoebe joining her in 1855, and they hosted receptions at their home that were attended by leading authors. Alice also published other poetry volumes, including Ballads, Lyrics, and Hymns (1866) and The Lover’s Diary (1868). Biographical information: ANB. (AC)
