Poet, essayist, scholar of Spanish literature. Brother of Henry Fothergill Chorley. Born in Billinge, Lancashire. Educated at the Royal Institution in Liverpool. Secretary of the Liverpool–Birmingham Grand Junction Railway. Contributed to Tait’s Edinburgh Magazine and Fraser’s Magazine. Moved to London in 1845 and became the reviewer of publications in foreign languages, such as Spanish, Italian, and German, for The Athenaeum. Close friends with Thomas Carlyle.
