Antiquarian, mineralogist, traveller, and poet. Born in Willingdon, Sussex. Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge. Travelled through Great Britain and Italy while employed as a tutor, and began collecting minerals and artefacts. Embarked on a grand tour around Sweden, Finland, Russia, Constantinople, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, and Jerusalem with another one of his pupils (1798-1802). Returned to England and sold his minerals and antiquarian objects, that he had collected during his travels, to various institutions. Married Angelica Rush on 20 March 1806.
