Antiquarian, mineralogist, traveller, and poet. Born in Willingdon, Sussex. Educated
at Jesus College, Cambridge. Travelled through Great Britain and Italy while employed
as a tutor, and began collecting minerals and artefacts. Embarked on a grand tour
around Sweden, Finland, Russia, Constantinople, Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, and Jerusalem
with another one of his pupils (1798-1802). Returned to England and sold his minerals
and antiquarian objects, that he had collected during his travels, to various institutions.
Married Angelica Rush on 20 March 1806. Appointed University of Cambridge Librarian
