Governor of the Gold Coast (1912-1919) and Nigeria (1919-1925). Married twice, Mary Ann (Minna) in 1896 and Elizabeth Lydia Rosabel in 1910. Contributed to Cornhill Magazine and Blackwood’s Magazine. Author of semi-autobiographical short stories including East Coast Etchings (1896), Studies in Brown Humanity (1898), and Bushwhacking and Other Sketches (1901). Biographical information: ODNB.
