Poet, editor, lecturer, and teacher of English literature. Born in Bourton on the Water, Gloucestershire. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford. Contributed to The Globe, Cornhill Magazine, Temple Bar, Quarterly Review, Pall Mall Gazette , and Nineteenth Century. Married Pauline Mary Strangways on 11 April 1878. Travelled extensively throughout the UK, as well as in the United States, lecturing and teaching. Established the Murder Club with Arthur Conan Doyle. Joined the staff of the Saturday Review in 1894. Editor of Shakespeare and British Classics for Schools (1899). Became the chair of English literature at the University of Birmingham in 1904. Acquainted with William Rossetti.
