Poet and playwright. Born in London. Son of George Colman the elder and Sarah Ford. Educated at Marylebone Seminary, then Westminster School, then Christ Church, Oxford, and finally King’s College, Aberdeen. Worked briefly in law before taking over his father's theatre company. Married Catharine Morris in 1784, and is presumed to have married Maria Gibbs in the early 1820’s, but no records of such have surfaced. Author of several volumes of poetry, including My Nightgown and Slippers, or, Tales in Verse (1797) and its sequel, Broad Grins (1802). Also author of autobiographies, songs, and a prolific amount of plays. Biographical information: ODNB. (BGL)
