Poet and schoolmaster. Born William Johnson in Torrington, Devon. Son of Charles William Johnson and his wife Theresa. Educated at Eton College and King’s College, Cambridge. Worked as assistant master at Eton until abruptly resigning in 1872 and adopting the surname Cory. Lived in Madeira, Portugal, afterwards until 1882. Married Rosa Caroline Guille in August 1878. Author of many essays on pedagogy, and two small volumes of poetry. Much of his other poetry, written in letters and journals, was published posthumously. Biographical information: ODNB. (BGL)
