Antiquary and folklorist. Worked in the Admiralty’s office (1819-1850). Published a collection of oral legends, Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland (1825-9). Elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and became a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1827 and British Archaeological Association in 1843. Helped found the Camden Society in 1839 and Percy Society in 1840. Acquainted with Thomas Moore. Biographical information: ODNB. (CC)
