Antiquary and folklorist. Worked in the Admiralty’s office (1819-1850). Published
a collection of oral legends, Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland (1825-9). Elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, and became a
member of the Royal Irish Academy in 1827 and British Archaeological Association in
1843. Helped found the Camden Society in 1839 and Percy Society in 1840. Acquainted
