Poet, historian, and journalist. Born in Redbridge, Southampton, to Anglo-Irish parents. Educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Travelled to Italy in 1822. Married Margaret Archer in 1823. Contributed a piece on the history of France to the Cabinet Encyclopaedia (1831). Appointed Paris correspondent for the Morning Chronicle in 1832, returning to England in 1844.
