E. S. D.Born in the West Indies to a father who was a Scottish plantation owner. Moved to England at age 4. Educated at the University of Edinburgh. Married Isabella Glyn in 1853 in Scotland and 1865 in London; she divorced him in 1874. Staff writer for the London Times from around 1855, and also contributed to many other newspapers and periodicals, mostly anonymously.
