Father of the poet Richard Henry Dana, Jr. Educated at Harvard University and Newport, Rhode Island, where he studied law. Married Ruth Charlotte Smith in 1813. Co-founder and editor of the North American Review in 1814. Contributed poetry to the New York Review and essays to the Biblical Repository and Quarterly Observer. Toured and gave lectures on William Shakespeare (1839-1851). Author of several volumes of poetry including The Buccaneer and Other Poems (1827). Friends with William Cullen Bryant.
