Jewish journalist, barrister, editor, and poet. Born in Blackheath, London. Wrote poetry and edited a family newspaper as a child. Educated at City of London School and Christ’s College, Cambridge. Began practicing as a barrister in 1870. Contributed to The Times. Member of the Anglo-Jewish Association and Jewish Historical Society of England. Became co-owner of the Jewish Chronicle in 1878, and sole owner from 1902-1906. Editor of Jewish World (1873-1875). Married Jane Jaffe on 3 February 1880. Author of Sir Montefiore, A Biographical Sketch and The Jews in Roumania; A Short Statement of their Recent History and Present Situation (1872).
