Poet, novelist, journalist, translator, Church of England clergyman, and headmaster. Born in Wells, Somerset. Educated at Durham University. Ordained a priest in 1852. married Jane Anne Greenaway in 1856. Founded and ran West London College at 155 Queen’s Road, Bayswater, from 1861 to 1868. This address is given in the Chambers’s Journal ledger entry for Davies’ poem published on 28 October 1871 (NLS Dep 341/368). Journalist for the Daily Telegraph in France during the Franco-Prussian War. Moved to South Africa to work for the Church. Returned to London and worked as a translator.
